Muscat, 9-11 December 2019
The National Records and Archives Authority of the Sultanate of Oman launches the Eighth International Conference entitled “Omani-Portuguese Relations in the 16th and 17th Centuries”. The conference aims at studying the aspects of this relationship since the beginning of the Portuguese presence in Oman and the Omani role in resisting and ending the Portuguese occupation of Oman, the Gulf, the Indian Ocean region and East Africa.
The conference also aims to shed light on some of the elements overlooked by many historians and politicians, as well as the circumstances of the arrival of the Portuguese to Oman, and the living conditions, economic and political situation under the control of the Portuguese, which lasted for nearly a century and a half. This is in addition to highlight references and studies that show the role of Omanis in fighting the Portuguese in the Gulf region and East Africa.
In conclusion, this eighth international conference seeks to discuss and deeply explore the history and heritage of Oman and the Omani-Portuguese Relations in the 16th and 17th Centuries through a review of various research papers and themes by researchers from different countries. This helps to create an important fund that reveals facts of the bright history of Oman.

- 3. Identifying the role of Omanis in the liberation of the Gulf, west coast of India and the east African coast from the Portuguese
- 4. Highlighting treaties and agreements in different fields.
- 5. Studying the effects of the Portuguese position on the internal situation in Oman.
- 6. Highlighting the areas of political, military and economic competition between Oman and Portugal after liberating the region from Portuguese.
- 7. Emphasizing on the importance of the Intifada or rising up and the organized resistance against the Portuguese during the reign of the imams.
- 8. Studying the contributions of people of occupied regions in assisting Omanis to fight Portuguese.
- 9. Examining the size of the economic competition between Oman and Portugal, to eliminate the monopoly policy adopted by the Portuguese.
- 10. Identifying the role of Oman’s commercial vessels and fleet in the waters of the Gulf, the Indian Ocean and the east African coast.
- 11. Studying the Ottoman’s role in confronting Portuguese and controlling ports and cities in the Arabian Peninsula along with navigation routs.
- 12. Reviewing and analyzing documents and manuscripts related to Oman in Portuguese libraries and archives.
Topics and Themes
First: Historical and Political Theme and the Omani-Portuguese Military Competition
- 1. Causes, motivations and contributions of Portuguese explorations and expeditions in the Gulf, the Indian Ocean and the eastern African coast from different aspects
- 2. Nominating Imam Nasir bin Murshid al-Yaarebi (1624 AD) as Imam of Oman and his role in launching the resistance against Portuguese along with Yaarebi Imams’ role in completing resistance.
- 3. Truce treaties and agreements signed between Portuguese and Yaarebi Imams during the liberation period.
- 4. Omani role in the liberation of the Gulf, the western coast of India and the east African coast, during the Portuguese presence in the region.
- 5. The role of Omani fleet in fight against the Portuguese outside Oman
- 6. The areas of political, military and economic competition between Oman and Portugal.
- 7. Treaties and conventions in the economic, political and military fields.
Second: Economic and Social Theme
- 1. The circumstances of the arrival of the Portuguese to Oman, and the living, social, economic and political conditions.
- 2. The role of the Portuguese merchant fleet in the Gulf and West Coast regions of India and the east African coast and its economic, commercial and social importance.
- 3. Treaties and trade agreements between Oman and Portugal.
- 4. The economic competition between Portugal and European countries (such as Britain, the Netherlands and France), Ottoman Empire and the Persian State and their relationships with Oman.
- 5. Portuguese competition for the Omani ships and commercial fleet in the waters of the Indian Ocean.
Third: Cultural Theme
- 1. The importance of the architectural and civilization aspects of castles and forts built by the Portuguese in the Gulf regions and the coasts of East Africa and other areas.
- 2. Oman through the Portuguese documents and manuscripts.
- 3. The historical and cultural importance of “Fort Jesus” in Mombasa.
- 4. Oman in the books of Portuguese travelers and explorers.
- 5. Areas of cooperation between Oman and Portugal in the scientific, archival, documentary and cultural fields.
- 6. Areas of cooperation between Oman and Portugal in the field of archaeological excavations.
- 7. Cultural and literary visits and trips between Oman and Portugal.
- Specialists in the history of Oman, Portugal and the region.
- Specialists and researchers interested in political, military and economic history fields.

Deadlines for Participation in the Conference
- 1. The completed Participation Form attached by a copy of passport and a personal photo should be emailed to email@example.com no later than 28/3/2019
- 2. Applicants, whose abstracts are initially accepted to participate in this conference, will be notified by 4/4/2019
- 3. Complete papers should be received by the Scientific Committee of the Conference no later than 21/7/2019
- 4. The final Arbitration Committee’s decision on the complete paper will be sent by 22/8/2019.

The submitted research paper shall comply with the following terms:
- 1. Each conference paper should focus on one of the above-mentioned themes
- 2. Only one researcher should participate in each research paper.
- 3. It should be authentic, innovative, and directly relevant to the conference’s themes, and state if it was published or delivered in previous conferences.
- 4. A researcher is allowed to participate in one research paper only.
- 5. It should not be published or delivered in previous conference(s).
- 6. The research paper should be written in a clear and suitable manner for international audience of academicians, decision makers and practitioners.
- 7. The methodology adopted in writing humanitarian sciences such as religions, literatures, philosophy, education, history and others is known as MLA and it should be followed in writing such researches.
- 8. Researcher’s full CV should not exceed five pages.
- 9. The research paper should consist of (4000-5000) words, including references and notes.
- 10. Both Arabic and English paper should be in font of Times New Roman, in size 16” for the title, 14” for the headlines, and 12” for the body.
- 11. Footnotes and references notes should be included according to the attached Appendix: “Note to Authors for English and Arabic Manuscripts”.
- 12. The research paper should be sent via email (MS Word).
- 13. The scientific committee has the right to reject any research paper that does not meet the scientific requirements.
- 14. The accepted research papers will be published in the Series of Surveys & Studies on National and International Records, in accordance with the recommendations of the scientific committee; and the organizing body only reserves its copyrights.
15. A list of references should be placed at the end of the research while the in-text citations in the footnotes.

Note to Authors for English and Arabic Manuscripts
Papers should be original. If there is overlap with material published elsewhere, details should be given.
Papers should be written in easily accessible style, suitable for international audience of academics, policy makers ad PR actioners.
- APA (American Psychological Association) style is most commonly used to cite sources within the social sciences, such as history, geography, political science, literature and linguistics.
- APA style dictates that authors are named last name followed by initials; publication year goes between parentheses, followed by a period. The title of the article is in sentence-case, meaning only the first word and proper nouns in the title are capitalized. The periodical title is run in title case, and is followed by the volume number which, with the title, is also italicized. If a digital object identifier (DOI) has been assigned to the article that you are using, you should include this after the page numbers for the article.
